Driving in Manhattan
Once you’re in Manhattan, NYC traffic can be overwhelming. Here are some tips for making driving in NYC easier and less anxiety-provoking.
- Plan your route ahead of time, and also have a back-up route in case you run into NYC traffic,
- Know the exits for the bridge or tunnel you’re taking so you won’t be creating a NYC traffic jam when you realize you need to be four lanes over at the last minute. You can find maps of all the FDR and West Side Highway entrances and exits in Park It! NYC 2009
- The traffic lights on 1st Avenue on the upper east side are timed so you can travel nearly 40 blocks north without stopping,
- Don’t get anxious if someone honks at you. The other driver could just be letting you know the light is green or you’re in their way. But don’t ignore the honking. You could be in danger or be heading towards a pedestrian.
Parking in Manhattan
Garage Parking is significantly easier and ranges in price from $9 all day to $67 for just a few hours. Some tips for finding cheap parking are:
- Early Bird Specials typically offer a lower rate if you park before 9 or 10am and leave in the early evening.
- Evening Specials are great rates if you park in the early evening, around 6pm, and you can stay for about 6 - 8 hours.
- Park farther away from the center of the city to find rates that drop by as much as 50% if you're willing to walk 3 - 5 blocks.
Street parking is the least expensive, but there are complicated rules and you will need a lot of quarters or a NYC Muni-Card for many of the street meters.
NYC uses Alternate Side of the Street Parking Rules, which determine when and where you can park. Street signs will outline the rules. Be sure you read all the signs on the entire street and not just the section where you are parking.
