NYC TRAFFIC

Content:

Some people consider driving in New York City an Olympic sport. Navigating one-way streets, thousands of taxis, honking cars, pedestrians, strange parking rules, buses, double-parked delivery trucks, sirens, and the sheer volume of NYC traffic can certainly be overwhelming.

Park It! NYC maps are the best way to navigate NYC traffic.

NYC RED LIGHT CAMERAS

We know it is tempting to go through a yellow light, but beware - there are at least 63 Red Light Cameras in NYC, according to our friends at the New York law firm of  Weiss & Associates at 888 Red Light.

By borough, there are at least 31 Red Light Cameras in Manhattan, 10 in The Bronx, 12 in Brooklyn, 8 in Queens, and 2 in Staten Island.

How does it work? The camera’s sensor can detect that a vehicle is moving too fast to stop at a red light, so it takes a photograph of the red light and then a few seconds later, it takes a picture of your car crossing through the intersection against the red light.

The good news is that a Red Light Summons DOES NOT put any points on your license. It is treated as a parking ticket and typically has a $50 fine.

According the Weiss & Associates, the only defense you have for this type of ticket is if the photographs do not clearly show that your vehicle was involved or ran a red light, medical emergency, mechanical problems, theft of vehicle and possibly other justification type defenses. But without a good defense supported by documentary proof, these tickets are extremely difficult to win.

Here is a list of the Red Light Cameras 888 Red Light has found:

FINDING GREAT PARKING DEALS

Garage Parking is significantly easier and ranges in price from $9 all day to $67 for just a few hours. Some tips for finding cheap parking are:
  • Early Bird Specials typically offer a lower rate if you park before 9 or 10am and leave in the early evening.
  • Evening Specials are great rates if you park in the early evening, around 6pm, and you can stay for about 6 - 8 hours.
  • Park farther away from the center of the city to find rates that drop by as much as 50% if you’re willing to walk 3 - 5 blocks.
Street parking is the least expensive, but there are complicated rules and you will need a lot of quarters or a NYC Muni-Card for many of the street meters. NYC uses Alternate Side of the Street Parking Rules, which determine when and where you can park. Street signs will outline the rules, you must be sure you read all the signs on the street and not just where you are parking.

PARK Smart NYC Pilot Program in Greenwich Village

PARK Smart is a new program developed with the community to make NYC parking easier while reducing congestion and improving safety. PARK Smart aims to increase the number of available metered parking spaces by encouraging motorists to park no longer than necessary. The meter rate is higher when demand for parking is greatest and decreases when demand is lower.

A six-month trial of PARK Smart began on October 6, 2008 in Greenwich Village. Meter rates will be $2.00/hr. from Noon to 4PM and $1.00/hr. at all other times that meters are in effect. All other regulations will remain the same.

PARK Smart PARK Smart NYC Pilor Area How do I identify a PARK Smart NYC Meter?
All PARK Smart meters will have the PARK Smart logo. PARK Smart meters will accept both quarters and NYC Parking Cards. NYC Parking Cards are sold in $10, $20, $50 and $100 increments and are available from nearby merchants where you see the PARK Smart NYC logo as well as online.
